DELTA SURVEILLANCE'S DAVID ROBINSON FEATURED AS SECURITY EXPERT IN LOCAL NEWS STORY!

WMC-TV  did a story about the growing need for home CCTV surveillance systems. They came to our office in order to view our Remote Video Central Monitoring Station and get owner, David Robinson's, expertise on this growing tread.

MEMPHIS, TN - (WMC-TV) - A Mid-South man can thank his home surveillance system for saving his belongings Friday. Curi Bernal said his video surveillance system was a great investment.  He said he hoped it will help authorities catch the two men responsible for breaking into his home. "It was just terrible," Bernal said.  "This feeling that you can't do nothing."

Bernal's two dogs watched helplessly as the suspects jumped the fence in the backyard and made their way onto the property. In the surveillance footage, one of the men can be seen sitting down and talking on his cell phone. Moments later, one of the suspects used a pick to break into a bedroom window.

"They had gotten into the bedroom for four minutes and tried to remove the TV from the wall," Bernal said.  "They tried to walk into the hallway.  That's when the motion detector and alarm went off." The two suspects then dropped everything and took off.

David Robinson with Delta Surveillance said the idea of video security systems in homes is catching on.

"It's always been a popular security measure for businesses, but more and more homes are finding the value of video," Robinson said.

Robinson said there are different types of surveillance cameras on the market to meet nearly any budget.

Bernal said that he will beef up security after the break-in. "We're probably going to get a bigger dog and put more cameras and security on the windows," Bernal said. Bernal and his family said they were not taking any chances.  They boarded up windows on their home for added protection and peace of mind.

At Delta Surveillance, Everything's on the Radar Screen

Published by Memphis Magazine "The Daily News" in November 2006

Guards at Delta Surveillance Co. witness crimes for a living.

In a small room in an East Memphis office building, they watch a wall of monitors that displays the activities going on in and around many area businesses as they happen.

"The difference in our security systems and some others is that in our (recordings), you see the police," said David Robinson, the owner of Delta Surveillance at 5587 Murray Road, explaining that his technicians watch what's recorded and respond immediately, while other security businesses simply record and go through the recordings after crimes occur.

With Robinson's company, someone is positioned at his office, which Robinson calls the central station because all the cameras feed remotely into monitors in one place. The benefit of that for customers, he said, is knowing someone is always watching.

The capability of offering remote surveillance from a central station is what has led to the business' success - that and a rising crime rate, Robinson said.

Capitalizing on crime

Through September of this year, Shelby County has seen 975 burglaries, according to a monthly report issued by the county sheriff's office. That number is up 22 percent from the same period last year.

Some of Robinson's clients include car lots, convenience stores and other businesses that are targets for thieves.

Robinson started Delta Surveillance in 1997 under the umbrella of an established security guard company called J Pickett Enterprises. Today, Delta Surveillance works in conjunction with that company to provide security guard services to companies that are being monitored remotely. Those guards, called the Delta Rangers, watch the surveillance monitors at night when most of the company's client businesses are closed.

Much of the time, what appear on the four computer monitors are the mundane occurrences that happen at a business or a home when no one is there. But once something happens, that all changes.

"If something comes into view, the screen comes alive with numbers," said Darrell Hanson, head technician at Delta Surveillance.

All eyes

Even a passing train gets noticed by the computer and alerts the guard that something is happening. Because of that sophisticated technology, one guard can watch hundreds of cameras, Hanson said.

Business owners also use the company's services to watch their employees. If suspicious activity is taking place, guards or technicians at Delta Surveillance can review digital recordings for any unusual behavior on the part of an employee.

Occasionally, what the company's cameras see can lead to an arrest.

In a recent incident when thieves stole several rolls of high-priced copper wire, guards from Delta Surveillance watched the entire thing. Once the rolls were thrown over a fence, the guards alerted Memphis police to the thieves' presence. Unfortunately, officers just missed the thieves, but the owners of the business eventually might be able to use the video to prosecute the individuals who stole the wire.

Shop talk

Robinson has worked in the private security industry since 1976. He began his career working as a security officer for a retired police chief.

In the past, he owned his own security guard service and private investigation agency. He also has owned an electronic security company called American Digital Systems, which he opened in 1981. American Digital Systems installed and serviced customized security systems that included intrusion alarms, closed circuit television systems, intercom systems and home theater surround sound systems.

That experience instilled in Robinson the desire to pursue the most advanced technology to catch criminals and prevent crime for his clients, he said.

In addition to protecting property, the remote surveillance system can be used to protect employees. In a situation in which a clerk might be apprehensive about someone in a store, the clerk can contact a guard at Delta Surveillance with a pre-arranged signal or alert and have police dispatched.

"We can call them and speak in coded phrases, and we can send someone out depending on the answers we get," Robinson said. "It's a great comfort to the employee, and very disturbing to the burglar."
